The Girona coach, Míchel Sánchez, appeared after one of the toughest defeats of his era leading the Girona team. “We have not been at the level needed against Madrid. When they are performing at a high level, we haven’t reached it. In our case, it has been more the merit of Madrid than our own demerit. In the duels, they have been far superior. We are not at their level, not at the level of Camavinga, Vinícius, Tchouaméni… This makes you see the reality of this season and what we are doing. An incredible season. It must be acknowledged that this fight for the league is not ours,” said Míchel.
One of the most repeated questions was what reaction the team could have after the defeat. “First, we must have humility to know where we stand. Coming to the Bernabéu to compete in the league, from within we knew it was not possible. We wanted to play the best game to try to compete face to face.” And he also wanted to take part of the blame: “The responsibility is mine, because I told them to press high. I wanted to push them to their maximum potential, and because there was more to gain than to lose. We are a team that is growing. Winning every game has been very difficult for us, and when the opponent is superior, it must be acknowledged. There are four or five teams that can fight 200 percent in every game. We could have stopped them by sitting back, but it’s not the club’s philosophy and it’s not what we have done throughout the year.”

One of the names of the match was also Yan Couto, whom Míchel wanted to console and help with his speech: “Yan will overcome this, and it will be good for him. It’s good for him to know that there can be days like this. I understand the player; he’s only 21 years old. This will be good for him.”
Although not stating it directly, Míchel talked about the possibility of winning the league: “I have the feeling that we have seen a very powerful Real Madrid and I think what we have seen today makes it difficult for them to drop points and, also, to lose the league,” concluded Míchel, who is already thinking about the next goal of the season.
